A Man’s Guide To Skincare

I really dislike the fact there is skincare specifically packaged for men, I say package because Lets face it, the product inside the tube is going to be of a similar formulation to that of any other skincare line, however for marketing reasons brands package their products in steel grey bottles that all blend into one on the shelves of your local retailers. While I understand the reasons a guy may not want to pick up a powder pink bottle of cleanser I really think in 2019 its time we scrapped the rule book, brands seem to be opting for a more gender-neutral way to package their products these days which  I am more than happy about. So, I thought I would put together a basic skincare list for you guys looking to up your skincare game.

Cleansers:

CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser (Full review here) This is a fab cleanser that is great no matter your gender, age or budget. If you want a cleanser that does a job with no fuss you need to grab a bottle of this. The gel(Ish) formula is fragrance-free, gentle & removes oils without stripping the skin. It says on the packaging its suitable for normal-dry skin however I have slightly combination dehydrated skin and this honestly works perfectly well for me. It offers hydration by using ceramides, Read the full review linked above for a full breakdown of the benefits of the cleanser.

CeraVe SA Smoothing Cleanser – For those with slightly more problematic skin you may want to try this cleanser as opposed to the one I have mentioned above. A 0.5% concentration of Salicylic acid allows the cleansing formula to perform a chemical exfoliation, gently dissolving dead skin and pore-clogging impurities to reveal a smoother surface, without disrupting skin’s microbiome. Don’t worry, this will not leave your face feeling tight & dehydrated, The formula also contains Hylauronic acid which will leave your skin feeling fresh, clean & hydrated without being oily.

La Roche Posey Toleriane Dermo-Cleanser – Clinically formulated for sensitive skin, the Toleriane Dermo-Cleanser from La Roche-Posayprovides immediate relief for irritated and uncomfortable skin, including skin prone to allergy or intolerances. This is always in my cupboard at home because it’s just so great. For those suffering from a shaving rash/burn, this could be the product you need to soothe your irritated skin.

Acid Toner/ Exfoliator:  There are generally only two products I recommend in this step.

Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant -an exfoliating fluid fortified with salicylic acid to help renew skin and minimise pores. Absorbing quickly into the skin, the leave-on exfoliant targets both the skin’s surface and deep down, sloughing away dulling dead skin cells whilst penetrating inside the pore to unclog and prevent blemishes from making an appearance.  This is a product I have recommended a billion times over. It’s fairly strong in the formulation, therefore, I would take it easy when you first start to use it. maybe just try it every other evening for a while and see how your skin reacts. This product has changed my skin, no exaggeration!

Pixi Glow Tonic. This is a cult product and great for those with duller skin that needs a little brightening. Powered by Glycolic Acid to gently buff away dead skin and impurities, the purifying treatment helps to refine the appearance of pores and stimulate cell renewal to create a brighter and clearer canvas. Enriched with Ginseng to improve circulation and Aloe Vera to replenish vital moisture, the hydrating tonic helps to restore a natural balance and soothe the skin. Expect a smooth, energised and glowing finish.

Serum & Moisturiser: Guys, Please use a serum. It will really benefit you, I promise but make sure you get one specific for your skin needs.

Dull skin- A vitamin C serum will work wonders. I’m currently using Timeless 20% Vitamin C + Ferulic Acid Serum which is great for brightening skin and will help even out complexion.

Dehydrated skin – Hydraluron is a great place to start to get some water back into those cells.

Moisturisers are a tricky subject for me, I Do you them but only on the occasions where I feel my skin needs a little more which tends to be in the evening. In the mornings I tend to just stick to my serums & a good SPF. I currently use the Heliocare Gel Oil-free which lasts forever and doesn’t break me out. If you feel like your skin would benefit from a moisturiser I would opt for something like La Roche Posey Toleriane Fluid or Avene Skin Recovery Cream.
